Visitor Information
It’s a 14-minute drive or 8.6 miles from our hotel near Assateague Island. Simply follow MD-611 S and cross to the barrier island via the Verrazano Bridge.
There is a $15 entrance fee per person.
Park operating hours vary by season. The Assateague Island Visitor Center is open 7 days a week from March to December, and closed weekends during the winter. See regular hours and available facilities.
Pets are only permitted in certain areas on the National Seashore and must be kept on a leash.
Tips for Your Trip
Maintain a safe distance from wildlife for their comfort. Assateague Island is dedicated to the protection and preservation of its wildlife. We recommend staying about one bus-length away from wild horses and at least three bus lengths away from seals.
Active duty lifeguards supervise the beaches from 10 AM – 5 PM seasonally. Practise proper beach safety and avoid touching any jellyfish in the ocean.
We recommend sturdy walking shoes whether you’re planning on beach hiking or sticking to trails.
Spot unique birds! There are over 320 species on the island, including American oystercatchers, great blue herons, snowy egrets, and piping plovers.
The Assateague Lighthouse is located on the Virginia portion but still worth a visit. The lighthouse is still operational and visitors can either climb for panoramic views or view the lighthouse by kayak from the water.
